“The Corsage”

Matilda unpinned her foam rollers out of her hair. She stared at herself, and wondered, “is this what i always wanted?”. Perhaps it was, as she gently brushed her hair into a flattering bun, after all being a mother of 5 couldnt be an accident. She deeply loved her husband, who was a man of few words and deep thoughts. She patted her face with powder and glanced over at the book she was reading earlier, by some bloke called Ellis Bell. Her fingers lightly thread over the golden embossed letters, which was interrupted by the shriek of one of her children. She grabs it and runs down the stairs of the manor, her manor.

She enters the ballroom, and finds her kids , Eleanor and Sebastian fighting over Eleanor's corsage, “ Why does she get to wear one? And why do you have one?” Eleanor and Sebatian are 6 and 12 respectively. She looks over her chest and glances over the flowers pinned to her chest, and looks over at Sebastian. Although he is 12, he has always been slower than his siblings, and doctors haven't exactly been helpful. She thinks for a moment and without a thought, switches its places from her chest to his. He gives her a warm smile and Eleanor, seeing this runs to her father.

“Matilda, come on it's about to begin.”  She obediently walks towards the voice  holding her dear sons hands in hers. There they are. Her perfect family, sitting down for a family photograph, waiting for them. She takes her place, while her fingers still tightly wrapped around her book as the camera starts rolling.

With every whirring sound, her mind slips deeper into her thoughts. She ponders upon the question, over and over and over. “Snap” she finally understands! She never wanted this life. But this is better than what she could have asked. It was all hers.
